Prep Roundup: Brown, Pellston softball clobber Gaylord St. Mary

PELLSTON – A combined 39 runs scored helped lift the Pellston softball team to a Ski Valley doubleheader sweep over Gaylord St. Mary at home on Thursday, May 19.  

Madison Brown paced the Hornets by throwing a perfect game in three innings of work in a 17-0 victory in the opener. Brown struck out eight Snowbirds.  

Brown, who tripled and had two doubles, finished with three hits and six RBI, while Gabby Landon went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Alyssa Ward tallied two hits and an RBI, Megan Bricker singled and knocked in a run, and Caroline Crenshaw singled to round out the Hornets.  

The Hornets (9-15, 4-10 Ski Valley) finished off the sweep with a 20-1 win in game two.  

Crenshaw earned the win on the mound, tossing a complete game with seven strikeouts. 

Emma Irwin had a hit and two RBI for the Hornets, Gabby Landon added two hits and an RBI, and Lillie Bourrie, Brown and Crenshaw each singled. Alivia Bowman added an RBI.  

Onaway baseball splits with JoBurg  

ONAWAY – The Onaway baseball team earned a hard-fought split with Johannesburg-Lewiston in a Ski Valley doubleheader on Thursday, May 19.  

“It was very nice to see our boys play that good,” said Onaway coach Rick Price. “That’s the best all-around two games we have played. Hopefully we are peaking at the right time.” 

The Cardinals (10-8, 7-3 Ski Valley) powered their way to an 11-5 game victory behind the hitting of Lucas Lovelace, who smacked two doubles and knocked in four runs. Also adding hits were Tucker Price (RBI, run), Cody Ruppert (RBI, run), Cole Selke (two runs), Jack Morgan (run) and Bridger Peel (run). Jadin Mix drove in a run and scored a run.  

Austin Veal was Onaway’s winning pitcher, striking out nine, allowing six hits and walking four in 4 2/3 innings.  

However, JoBurg bounced back with a 3-0 victory in the nightcap.  

Justin Kramer, Price and Morgan each had a hit for Onaway.  

Selke took the loss on the mound, striking out five, allowing three hits and walking two in four innings. Mason Beebe tossed two innings in relief, striking out three and allowing a hit.  

Mackinaw City softball smacks Brimley twice  

BRIMLEY – The Mackinaw City softball team continues to trounce its Northern Lakes Conference opponents.  

On Thursday, May 19, the Comets were at it again with their offense, smashing Brimley on the road with 21-5 and 25-6 victories in a conference doubleheader.  

The Comets (18-2, 11-1) were led in the opener by Madison Smith, who went 2-for-3 with a homer, four RBI and three runs scored, while Marlie Postula finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Comets adding a hit apiece were Rae Hingston (double, RBI, four runs), Rian Esper (three RBI), Kenzlie Currie (double, RBI, run), Jersey Beauchamp (three runs), Gabi Bell (two runs) and Julia Sullivan (two runs). Gracie Beauchamp scored three times.  

Postula was Mackinaw City’s winning pitcher, striking out four, allowing five hits and walking two in four innings thrown.  

Smith kept up her powerful hitting in the nightcap, going 2-for-2 with two homers, five RBI and five runs scored. Hingston (three RBI, three runs) and Jersey Beauchamp (two RBI, three runs) each finished 2-for-3. Sullivan (two RBI, three runs), Currie (RBI, three runs) and Bell (double, three runs) each chipped in with a hit. Gracie Beauchamp scored three runs, Eva Maida scored twice, and Postula scored a run.  

Jersey Beauchamp earned the win on the mound for Mackinaw City, striking out six, walking four and allowing three hits in four innings.  

Comet baseball plays solid, but gets swept by Brimley 

BRIMLEY – The Mackinaw City baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Brimley, losing 1-0 and 4-1 contests on Thursday, May 19. 

Even in defeat, Mackinaw City coach Elijah praised his team’s performance.  

“I was extremely happy with how our kids played,” said May. “Brimley has not lost a game in the (Northern Lakes Conference), and we showed up tonight and played great baseball. Overall, this was the best defensive baseball that we have played all year. We have made great strides as a team defensively all season, and we put it all together for an entire doubleheader.”  

Travin Barkley took the loss for Mackinaw City in game one, striking out four, allowing seven hits and walking two in five innings pitched.  

Trystan Swanson (stolen base) and Nick Vieau each recorded a hit for the Comets (11-12-1, 6-6 NLC).  

In game two, Sabastian Pierce, who took the loss, struck out seven, walked four and allowed three hits in four innings of work.  

Barkley drove in a run and Jacob Sroka scored a run to lead Mackinaw City’s offense.  

Siebigeroth makes all-conference, leads Comets at NGC meet  

MACKINAW CITY – Mackinaw City’s Jeffrey Siebigteroth earned a spot on the all-conference second team after a strong showing at the Northwoods Golf Conference championship meet held at the Mackinaw Club on Thursday, May 19.  

Siebigteroth’s 18-hole score of 105 was good enough for an all-conference second team honor. Siebigteroth led the Comets, who finished fifth with a 462 score.  

Noah Valot (111), Isaac Valot (123), Blake Jenkot (123), Lucas Bergstrom (130) and Tanyon Pierce (134) also represented the Comets in the meet.  

Mancelona (425) won the meet, while Fairview (426) was second and Gaylord St. Mary (427) earned third.  

Mackinaw City will next play at a Division 4 regional meet at Ellsworth’s Antrim Dells Golf Course on Tuesday, May 31. 

Inland Lakes baseball splits with Rogers City  

INDIAN RIVER – The Inland Lakes baseball team battled to a split with Rogers City in a non-conference home doubleheader on Wednesday, May 18.  

In a 6-3 victory in game one, Connor Wallace led the Bulldogs (20-6) with two hits, including a double, and knocked in two runs, while Dylan Wymer tallied two hits and scored a run. Jackson Boctorff (RBI, run) and Aidan Fenstermaker (two runs) chipped in with a hit apiece.  

Austin Brege earned the win on the mound for Inland Lakes, striking out four, allowing six hits and walking one in three innings. Boctorff pitched three innings in relief, striking out four, allowing two hits and walking two.  

While the Bulldogs were victorious in the opener, they fell short of the sweep after a 6-5 loss to the Hurons in the nightcap.  

Wallace (two RBI, two runs), Wymer (double, run) and Payton Teuthorn led the Bulldogs with two hits each. Also adding hits were Jacob Willey (RBI), Kaden Hansel (RBI) and Aidan Fenstermaker (run).  

Boctorff (six hits), Fenstermaker (strikeout, two walks) and Teuthorn (four strikeouts, two hits) pitched two innings apiece for Inland Lakes.
