Nick Foles expected to sign with Colts, will back up Matt Ryan

Yet again, Nick Foles is stepping in to a team that just lost Carson Wentz.

Indianapolis is expected to bring Foles in to back up Matt Ryan, according to multiple reports, which will reunite the former Eagles quarterback with his former offensive coordinator, Frank Reich. The deal is not completed but expected to be official next week, NFL Network reported.

Reich, now the Colts’ head coach, led the Eagles’ offense in 2016 and 2017, the latter season including Foles taking over for an injured Wentz and leading Philadelphia to a Super Bowl victory.

This time, the Colts traded Wentz to the Commanders and now will bring back another quarterback from Reich’s past.

Foles, who also took over for an injured Wentz in 2018 and helped the Eagles to a wild-card playoff victory on the road in Chicago, leveraged his success to a starting job in Jacksonville that did not work out. He was traded to the Bears to compete for a job with Mitchell Trubisky for one season, then backed up Justin Fields and Andy Dalton last season. The Bears released the 33-year-old this offseason.

Reich, who will be in his fifth season with the Colts, went 9-8 last season with the other Eagles quarterback he coached in Philly, but Wentz underwhelmed and the team fell flat in the final week of the season and lost to the lowly Jaguars, which kept them from a playoff berth.
