Police charge second suspect connected to deadly downtown Spartanburg shooting

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - The Spartanburg Police Department said a second suspect is custody after a shooting that killed one person and injured another near the Local F.I.G in Spartanburg on May 21, 2022.

Officers said the first suspect, 33-year-old Tyson Maurice Thompson, turned himself in at the Spartanburg County Detention Center on June 28, 2022. He was charged with Murder, Attempted Murder, Possession of a weapon during a violent crime, Unlawful carry of a handgun, and Unlawful carry of a firearm by a person convicted of domestic violence. He is currently being held at the Detention Center.

We’re told a second suspect and family member of Thompson, Travis Diego Thomas, neglected to report a crime and he intentionally withheld information from law enforcement and was arrested on June 28.

Officers said they responded to the scene at around 2:20 a.m on May 21, 2022. When they arrived, officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper torso lying on the ground. According to officers, he passed away before EMS arrived. The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 31-year-old Dearrius Lynell Bobo from Spartanburg.

Later, officers learned that another victim had been taken to the hospital by their friends after the shooting. Officers said the second victim is still in the hospital in serious condition.

Officers were told that the situation began when a group of people got into an argument before the shooting. One of the individuals never went inside the business, and the rest were asked to leave by security personnel. While the victims were walking toward 122 Magnolia Street, someone allegedly drove by in a red Toyota sedan and started shooting. According to officers, they later located the vehicle used during the incident.

The day after the shooting, the Local F.I.G released the following statement regarding the situation.

“I say this with a heavy heart as a terrible tragedy happened early this morning several doors down from our building. A life was lost on the public sidewalk.

While the victim was not our customer and had not visited our establishment last night our hearts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones as they grieve the loss of their loved one.

Today several news resources published that the fight started in our restaurant. This is inaccurate information. The involved individuals were not on our establishment and our restaurant had nothing to do with the shooting.”

Thompson had a bond court hearing on Wednesday, June 29, and the judge denied the bond.
