The Pierce County Sheriff's Office and school district officials are investigating the death of an 11-year-old student who passed away Friday, four days after she was apparently involved in some type of on-campus fight earlier this week that was caught on video, authorities said.
Investigators are waiting for an official cause of death from the Pierce County medical examiner before determining how to proceed, according to sheriff's Sgt. Darren Moss. It was not immediately clear when those results would be issued.
As of Friday evening, no arrests or criminal charges have been filed in connection with the death of the girl, a student at Ford Middle School in Tacoma.
The student was involved in some sort of physical dispute on Monday that occurred on the school campus, located at 1602 104th Street E. and part of the Franklin Pierce School District, according to administrators and law enforcement officials.
Sometime after Tuesday, officials said the girl was rushed to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital, where she was admitted for treatment but authorities have not said what her condition was when she arrived for medical care.
A district spokesman said administrators contacted the family on Wednesday. It was not immediately clear when school officials learned that the girl's injuries appeared to be life threatening.
A district spokesman said administrators were told earlier this week by the girl's relatives that she had been hospitalized.
According to district officials and Moss, someone captured the incident on cell phone video, which has been given to the sheriff's office.
Investigators declined to release the video to KOMO News, citing their ongoing investigation.
It was not immediately clear who else was involved with the on-campus fight or what led to the dispute.
