The past 24 hours has been active across South Florida. On our Friday, much of Palm Beach and Martin counties saw rain accumulation between 1-2". Those farther north saw rain accumulations less than an inch of rain.
But localized totals in Boca Raton were even higher. Many spots in downtown Boca picked up between 6-8" of rain, with some roadways inundated with over a foot of water.
Today, that risk continues but in a slightly different area.
An upper level low rotating through the southeast will provide the lift needed for showers and storms to develop. Moisture continues to pump onshore thanks to south to southeast winds from an area of high pressure off the east coast of Florida.
The combination between these two features will bring afternoon showers and storms. First developing across the interior and sliding east with time.
However, some Saharan dust is moving into the state of Florida today. It will largely be located across Martin county south, helping to limit available moisture from Stuart south.
So today's rain chances will be best found across St. Lucie, Okeechobee and Indian River counties.
Flash flooding is possible in any area that sees training activity, similar to what Boca Raton saw yesterday. Plus, the upper low and daytime heating may provide enough storm fuel for some severe weather in spots.
The main risks with any severe storms will be strong damaging winds and small quarter size hail stones.
The final other weather risk today is the heat. High temperatures in the upper 80s and lower 90s at the coast, will be even warmer inland - up to the mid 90s there.
Factor in the humidity, and heat index values will range from the upper 90s to low 100s across the area. Please treat this heat seriously. Take frequent breaks in the shade or A/C, drink plenty of water and listen to your body.
