UK baseball splits doubleheader, 1 win from SEC tournament ticket

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – The Kentucky baseball team has been hovering towards the bottom of the SEC standings for most of the conference season, and it all comes down to this weekend if they can keep their season alive.

The Wildcats entered this weekend’s series against No. 19 Auburn needing two wins to secure their spot in the SEC tournament. The bottom two teams in the SEC do not make the conference tournament, those spots are currently occupied by Missouri and Mississippi State.

Thursday’s game against the Tigers was rained out and pushed to Friday afternoon for a doubleheader. Kentucky won Game 1, 5-1 but lost Game 2, 6-3 at Kentucky Proud Park.

Saturday’s rubber match sets the stage for the Wildcats to punch their ticket to Hoover, Alabama for the conference tournament if they can beat Auburn, with the first pitch set for 2 p.m.

Kentucky held Senior Day festivities between games, with eight seniors recognized and getting the opportunity to throw a ceremonial first pitch to their parent at home plate.
