Injuries, doubleheaders forcing Yankees, Mets into deep rotation shuffles

No baseball for the New York metro area Friday night, thanks to rain in NYC postponing the Yankees and White Sox and snow in Denver postponing the Mets and Rockies.

That means both locals will now have a doubleheader over the weekend, the Mets and Rockies playing a pair Saturday and the Yankees and White Sox having a twin bill Sunday, so both will have to re-shuffle their pitching rotations.

On the Mets’ side, Friday’s scheduled starter, Carlos Carrasco, will pitch Game 1 of Saturday’s double-dip, and Trevor Williams, who was in line to pitch Saturday after making a spot start in place of the injured Tylor Megill on Monday, will get Game 2.

David Peterson is with the team in Denver, but with Max Scherzer out long-term due to an oblique injury and his next turn in the rotation scheduled for Monday, the Mets will have to do some shuffling – and regardless of where they slot in Peterson, they will need at least one other spot starter next week ahead of Thursday’s off day.

The Mets are hopeful Megill can return on May 27 when eligible or soon after, so their May 26 off-day looms large, depending on Megill’s status. The Mets could choose to do a bullpen game next Wednesday prior to the off-day if Megill looks ready to return before May 31, could try to find a way to get top prospect Thomas Szapucki – who threw one inning for Triple-A Syracuse on Friday before being removed – into the mix, or summon Adonis Medina, who was the 27th man for Tuesday’s doubleheader and threw 2 2/3 innings against St. Louis, to make a spot start as well.

On the Yankees’ side, Nestor Cortes will simply shift from Friday’s scheduled start to Saturday afternoon, but Aaron Boone said that Sunday’s plan is TBD. Luis Severino (Saturday’s original starter) and Jameson Taillon (Sunday’s original starter) would be next in line, but as the Yankees do not have an off day again until Memorial Day, they will need to insert a spot starter somewhere – the question is whether using the 27th man for Sunday or having that pitcher throw Tuesday against Baltimore is the optimal alignment.

Also complicating matters: Luis Gil, who made a spot start against the White Sox last week after the Yankees’ May 8 double-dip necessitated an extra arm, suffered a “significant” arm injury Wednesday while pitching in Triple-A. He could’ve slotted in Tuesday against the Orioles on regular rest, also keeping Gerrit Cole on his five-day schedule, but he is now out of the mix.

Deivi Garcia pitched Friday so he’s likely out, so the two names to watch are Clarke Schmidt – who hasn’t pitched since throwing 35 pitches in relief last Saturday – or lefty JP Sears, who is SWB’s scheduled starter for Saturday and is on the 40-man roster:

“JP Sears has been down there starting and getting built up too. So that’s one of the things now we’ll kind of talk about and see just where we want to insert that sixth guy,” Boone said of his plans. “But it could be a number of the candidates and a number of different ways you can go about it.”
