A $40-million dollar sports complex could soon be a real thing in Saraland. The city unanimously voted to move forward with a roughly $50-thousand dollar feasibility study that will take roughly 12 weeks.

The complex would be on Celeste Road, right next to Saraland Fire Station 3.

"We already had some land here, so this would be the perfect location," City of Saraland Parks and Recreation Director Ashley-Nicole Flowers said,.

Flowers said the city acquired more land to the left of the station, so now they have 140 acres for the complex.

"Right now, we have already entered in a contact with Chambless King Architects, they are a developer. They just did Sand Mountain Sportsplex in Albertville," Flowers said. "We have requested diamond fields, we have requested rectangular fields for soccer, lacrosse, pickle ball and tennis courts, an amphitheater."

Also, a multiuse use conference and recreational center along with a gym for residents.

"We need to catch up with our growing population right now," Flowers added.

Saraland Mayor Howard Rubenstein said the complex would be paid for by bonds, but they only have so much time to secure them before interest rates go up. The mayor said he's happy that council approved to move forward on the feasibility study and said this is going to be great for Saraland.

"I think that Saraland has been very blessed having wonderful growth and being able to add a lot of amenities for our residents and I think that this is just another example of where we'll be able to get some benefits from this, making our community a great place to live," the mayor said.

Sports Facility Management is the agency handling the feasibility study so they're going to be the ones narrowing down the numbers to figure out how much this sportsplex would impact the economy in Saraland. It will be done in about 12 weeks.
