MIAMI TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) - Police are investigating after a fatal officer-involved shooting in Miami Township Friday.
Crews were called to the Berry Lane Apartments on Business 28 around 5 p.m. after reports of a woman firing shots.
Miami Township Police Chief Mike Mills said the woman came out with a gun and fired once at the officers. They told her to drop her weapon, but she refused and fired again. That's when one officer returned fire and hit her.
AirCare was called to the scene, but the woman later died.
Police said they do not know why the woman was firing shots. There was no dispute they are aware of.
"We do believe mental health is an issue," said Mills. "We have officers who are highly trained [in mental health response], but, however, when someone shoots at us, we don’t have time. We have ran out of options at that point."
Mills also said the woman was known to the department.
"Some of these officers knew this female. They had dealt with her in the past on different calls," he said. "They almost had invested interest in it because they knew her and they knew her name and they were calling out for her."
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations is currently investigating this case. Mills says the department will hopefully be able to release body camera footage Friday night or Saturday.
Mills says they are not releasing the woman's or officer's names at this time. The officer is on paid administrative leave pending the end of the investigation, which is protocol.
