Metropolis Animal Control and Abatement Officer, John Roman joined WMOK this week for Coffee Break and discussed the extraordinary number of abatements that he has recently issued.

Early voting for the General Primary Election, which will be held on June 28, 2022, started yesterday, May 19 and will go through June 27, 2022. Early voting is done at the Massac County Courthouse, 1 Superman Square, in the County Clerk’s Office – Monday through Friday 8A-12P and 1-4P and on Saturday, June 25, 2022 between 8A -12P.



Metropolis Arrests

May 11, 2022 – Metropolis Officers were called to a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 200 block of E. 18th. Upon arrival, Offices learned that the victim had been struck by Cain D. Wilkins, 20, Joppa. Wilkins was arrested for Domestic Battery and lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

May 14, 2022 – Timothy M Loucks,57, Metropolis was arrested in the 2200 block of Metropolis St. Loucks was wanted on a warrant. The warrant was issued by Williamson County, IL for resisting/obstructing. Loucks was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.


Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition Director Holly Barker Windhorst has updated WMOK as to the status of the Narcotics Anonymous meetings.  Windhorst regrettably told WMOK that due to unforeseen obstacles the meetings will remain on hiatus.  WMOK will stay in touch with Director Windhorst on the status of the meetings and we will welcome Holly into the studio for WMOK’s Coffee Break on Thursday June 8th.

The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook Statement for our area, along with a Wind Advisory until 7P this evening. Expect South winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Today and Tonight The entire region is covered by either a Wind Advisory or a Lake Wind Advisory today. Please refer to the Advisories for details. A few thunderstorms could reach southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois late tonight. The storms should be well below severe limits.

Saturday through Thursday – A few thunderstorms could reach southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois before dying early Saturday morning. The storms should be well below severe limits. A cold front will bring an area of thunderstorms through the region as it passes late Saturday through Sunday morning. A few strong to severe storms with large hail and damaging winds cannot be ruled out mainly in the late afternoon and evening. Otherwise, locally heavy rainfall and lightning will be the primary concerns. Scattered thunderstorms are possible Tuesday through Thursday. Locally heavy rain and lightning are the primary hazards.

Monday, May 23 – At The River Ministries Monthly Community Meals – Dorothy Miller Park – Free community meals are held on the fourth Monday of each month at 5P.
-The meal will have barbecue, chips, baked beans, coleslaw or potato salad and ice cream with toppings.  There will be activities and outdoor games to enjoy along with live contemporary Christian music.  If it rains, the event will be held at the Metropolis Community Center located at 900 W. 10th St. If you are in need of transportation, you can call (618) 638-7561 by 3PM Monday.
-Boarding for the First Baptist Church van will be at 4:30P at Guardian House, Haven House and Humma Apartments.


 


 

On Saturday, May 21, from  7 AM – 12 PM  at the Vienna Community Farmers Market Johnson County Courthouse  –  Vienna Community Farmers Market located on the town square in Vienna, IL 1.5 miles west of I-24.

Massac County Patriot Boys Basketball Camp . June 6-9 for Grades 2nd through 9th. Registration will be the day of, 2nd through 5th grade is 9A – 11:30A; 6th through 9th grades will be 12:30-3P. The cost is $40. For more information, call Coach Joe Hosman at (270) 816-6923.


Metropolis Public Library Summer Reading Program Registration will take place on 06/07/2022 (Tue.) from 10:30am – 11:30am at the Metropolis Public Library

The Little Wigglers program will begin on Tuesday, May 31, 2022.  The Little Wigglers program is an in-house program designed by the Metropolis Public Library for age groups 3 & Under,  Pre- K & Kindergarten,   1st & 2nd,  3rd & 4th

 

*The Library will provide a take home program for any 5th & 6th grade students interested in participation for the summer. Ask the front desk.

*One parent must remain with child/children 5 & under.

* Please let them know if your child needs any special accommodations, they want it to be a great experience for all children.


On Thursday, June 9, at 7P – Superman  5K Fun Run / Walk at Harrah’s Metropolis.  This Massac County United Way fundraiser is FUN for the whole family!
Entry Fee: $20 (by June 3) or $25 after  Kids 10 & Under: $10 (by June 3) or $15 after  T-shirts are guaranteed for pre-registered runners.

The last day of school for Massac Unit #1 Students will be on Thursday, May 26th –  Friday, May 27th Teachers will have a Teacher-In-Service day.
Summer School will be offered this summer from June 13 – July 1 and July 5 – 22. Classes will be from Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at the SCC Metro Center. If a student is 16 and has failed a class, they are eligible to enroll. Contact Mrs. Bellamey for more information.
