The New England Patriots made one of the biggest surprise picks in the NFL Draft this year. The Patriots drafted offensive guard Cole Strange with their first-round pick, number 29 overall. It was so shocking, it drew quite the reaction from Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead. Apparently they were not the only ones surprised though, as Strange detailed the phone call he received as he was chosen.

Strange reportedly thought he was being pranked when he received the phone call from New England.

“Sir, I don't mean to be disrespectful at all, but I've gotta know because I've got some crazy friends. Is this a prank?”

Then Patriots coach Bill Belichick began speaking. Of course, all doubts vanished at that point. According to Masslive writer Chris Mason, that's when Cole and his father Greg Strange went nuts.

Cole Strange was regarded as one of the best guards in the draft. He was projected to be anywhere from an early second round pick to a mid-fourth round pick. Hence the shock and surprise when his phone rang.

The Patriots lost offensive guard Shaq Mason in free agency, creating a huge hole on the offensive line. Strange, who was a standout offensive lineman at UT Chattanooga, was named to First Team All-Conference by the coaches of the Southern Conference. He received Second Team honors his sophomore and junior years, starting 11 games at left guard each season. He also played a bit of center while in college.
