One week from Saturday five Orange Line Metro stations will close for the summer – New Carrollton, Landover, Cheverly, Deanwood, and Minnesota Avenue.
Riders at each of the stations will be offered shuttle buses by Metro in place of the trains. The stations will not reopen until the day after Labor Day in September.
New Carrollton will have the most riders who are affected – according to the most recent numbers available from Metro, in March it had more than triple the riders of any of the other four stations – in March 1780 riders entered the New Carollton station on average weekday, compared with 510 at both Minnesota Avenue and Deanwood, 500 at Landover, and 316 at Cheverly.
New Carrollton has more riders in part because it is an end of the line station, but also because it is Prince George’s County’s most important transit hub – in addition to Metro there is an Amtrak and a MARC station, plus a Greyhound bus terminal.
The station has also attracted the eye of developers in recent years, with new apartment and office building going up next to the Metro.
