A big victory for Gleeks who didn’t stop believing.
Six months after getting kicked off Netflix, Glee is set to return to streaming beginning June 1 via Disney+ and Hulu, TVLine has learned. (The move makes sense, considering Ryan Murphy’s musical phenom became an official Disney property following Mickey Mouse’s acquisition of Glee producer 20th Television).
The June 1 date is a fortuitous one, as it marks the launch of LGBTQIA+ Pride Month celebrations.
Glee premiered on Fox in 2009 and ran for six seasons.
Rumors of a reboot have been heating up in recent years. Last fall, Fox’s entertainment president Michael Thorn addressed the speculation, telling our sister pub Deadline that “We always welcome celebrating our iconic shows and revisiting those with surprising takes and new approaches so, especially in this crowded market, we’re always open to reinventing our best IP with some of our favorite partners.”
Of course, given Friday’s news, any new iteration of Glee would likely land on Hulu or Disney+. A rep for Disney declined to comment on the possibility of a revival/reboot.
A show that fell apart in its second season and never recovered.
That’s a lot of peoples opinion. Honestly I think I didn’t fall of until Season 5 when Cory died. Thought it recovered some in the final season once the sting of him being gone had passed
I have to agree. Season 1 was by far the strongest but the series was smooth sailing until the fifth season. While the later seasons could be called “historically awful” there’s no denying how it had a cultural impact in its first few years.
I have a feeling “Glee: The New Class” will be premiering on D+ in the next few years…
agreed; although I’d make the argument that the first 13 episodes of Season 1 (before winter hiatus) were the best & strongest. When it returned the following April and was this cultural phenomenon, that’s when they started doing the gimmicky over-the-top episodes and wacky storylines, unfortunately.
Lol ever since Glee went off Netflix, I’ve had an intense desire to watch it. Now that it is coming back, we’ll see if I do.
Just in time for the anniversaries of Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera’s deaths.
I loved the first season. Somewhere during season 2 I wondered why I was still watching and dropped it. Maybe I’ll watch and fast forward through everything but the musical numbers.
I stuck it out for the whole run. S1: Very good initial 13, uneven back 9. S2: Mostly terrible. S3: Has it’s moments and decent overall. S4: Good! S5: Terrible. S6: Actually works when it spends time with the new class, you should check it out.
Uh Why????
Enjoyed and miss this show! Definitely going to rewatch!
If they can put Glee on Disney+ with the things Mark was accused of before he took his life they need to put all episodes of Andi Mack up!!!!!
Ooh, what was the reason they pulled Andi Mack?
The Sue Sylvester character ruined the show.
I’ll stuck to my DVD’s that I bought during the show’s run.
But will they finally make it Regionals? :)
I might have to give S1 a rewatch. I stopped watching after Cory died.
I watched every episode and purchased all the DVDs but seriously doubt I will do a rewatch after all the tragic cast member events that transpired in recent years. Many of the singing/dancing performances were truly wonderful, though.
Glee was also streaming on Prime Video in the US for about a year when it expired at the same time as Netflix
This announcement is weird to me, as Canadian Disney+ has had Glee under its Star category for some time now.
