The Oregonian/OregonLive wins 17 awards in regional journalism contest

The Oregonian/OregonLive won 10 first-place awards and seven other awards in the Society of Professional Journalists regional contest, with results announced Thursday on social media. The contest covers five states, including Washington, Oregon and Montana.

In the large newsroom division, the newsroom won first place awards in the following categories:

Crime, The Oregonian/OregonLive staff, for “Under the Gun,” an in-depth project on Portland’s record homicides in 2021.

Natural disaster reporting, The Oregonian/OregonLive staff, for its heatwave enterprise story.

Editorials, Helen Jung, for her heat wave editorial.

Series, Douglas Perry, “The Obsession.”

Homelessness, Nicole Hayden, “On the Edge.”

Sports columns, John Canzano.

Government reporting, Shane Dixon Kavanaugh, for his green energy fund expose.

Audio, Andrew Theen, Jeff Manning, and Beth Nakamura, for the “Beat Check” podcast episode about health care workers fighting COVID-19.

Video, Brooke Herbert, for “How One Native Family on the Columbia River Copes with COVID Loss One Year Later.”

Second place awards were earned in the following categories:

Equity reporting, The Oregonian/OregonLive staff, for its work exposing heat wave disparities.

Sports feature, Douglas Perry, for his Bing Russell retrospective.

Health reporting, Aimee Green, for “Last in Line,” her article about how senior citizens were leapfrogged in the race for COVID-19 vaccines.

Multimedia, Samantha Swindler, for her article and video on “Mr. Gresham.”

Sports action photo, Sean Meagher, for his photograph of University of Oregon football player Travis Dye.

Photography, Dave Killen, two awards for his protest fire photograph (general news) and his tuxedo behind broken glass photo (spot news).
