JACKSON COUNTY, MI -- An investigation into a shooting that left one man dead and a Columbia Township police officer on leave has concluded, and a review is underway.
As of May 20, the Michigan State Police investigation into the shooting death of Erik Poul Moller Nielsen has concluded, officials said.
Nielsen, 36, was shot and killed by a Columbia Township police officer on the morning of March 31, police said.
Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney Jerry Jarzynka said he has begun personally reviewing the MSP investigation report. Jarzynka said he has no timeline for when his review will be completed.
The shooting took place at about 2:09 a.m. March 31, in the 100 block of Hawthorne Drive near Lake Columbia in Columbia Township, southeast of Jackson. The Columbia Township Police Department officer who shot Nielsen has been placed on administrative leave per department policy.
Columbia Township Police Chief Jay Niles said the officer involved in the shooting is still on leave, and will remain on leave until the matter is resolved.
The incident started when the officer responded to a medical assistance call in the area, police said. The events leading up to the shooting are still under investigation.
No other details have been released.
