Students are collecting cereal boxes to help others eat during the summer months when school is out. Laurel Oak Elementary students in North Naples are hosting a cereal drive to get 1,400 boxes for those who are hungry. The cereal boxes are meant for students who may not have as much food to eat while school is out for the summer. The drive will help students who attend Eden Park Elementary in Immokalee, a Title 1 school where a large number rely on free breakfast and lunch. “My heart as teacher, I’m going to maybe cry but I won’t cry, it’s overflowing right now because of the outreach, the school, the kids, how excited. I have kids run to my room all day long dropping off cereal,” said Laura Kerlek, a fourth-grade teacher at Laurel Oak Elementary. The donation drive was a learning experience for students at Laurel Oak. “As a teacher to see kids embrace this and want to help and stepping up to be leaders, it’s just, my heart is full right now,” Kerlek said. The group is really close to its goal, one even set up a lemonade stand for a few hours to raise money to buy more boxes. Students will be distributing the boxes at Eden Park Elementary on Monday.
