The Alachua County Public School (ACPS) District will be holding their annual Watermelon Day on Monday, May 23rd.

ACPS Public Information Officer, Jackie Johnson, said the district's Watermelon Day just comes a few days after the Newberry Watermelon Festival.

More than 120 Newberry Elementary School 1st graders will be "learning about watermelons inside and out", Johnson said, from both the National and Florida Watermelon Queen.

Johnson said the National Watermelon Queen for 2022, Bethany Barfield, is a Newberry Native.

The students will be participating in hands-on, watermelon exploration while experts explain the growing process for watermelons, Johnson said.

Johnson said the students will also be learning how to spit watermelon seeds.
