MARQUETTE — The Sault High girls finished a close second in a Division I track and field regional Thursday.

For a second straight year, Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie were the leading girls teams at the regional, but the Redettes took first against by single digits. Marquette won with 64 points, while the Blue Devils were second with 59. Escanaba took third with 42, followed by Gladstone 18 and Menominee 4.

The top four individuals and relay teams in each event qualify for U.P. Finals, scheduled at Kingsford High School on June 4.

“We had a lot of PRs across the board and I was really proud of the effort,” Sault High girls track and field coach Scott Menard said. “It’s tough to lose by five points, where just a couple events could be the difference. But again, we did what we could and ran many of our best times of the year. We’re excited about the team we’ll take to Finals.”
