When Jimbo Fisher left Florida State for Texas A&M in 2017, it set in motion Mario Cristobal eventually being hired by the Miami football program. Florida State hired Willie Taggart from Oregon to succeed Fisher. Cristobal was elevated from offensive coordinator to head coach after Taggart’s one season with the Ducks.

Cristobal was 35-13 in four seasons plus the 2017 Las Vegas Bowl with Oregon. Taggart led Oregon to a 6-6 regular season in 2017. Cristobal was named the interim head coach on December 5 and hired as the full-time head coach on December 8. Oregon lost 38-28 to Boise State in the Las Vegas Bowl.

With near-immediate success at Oregon the outcry for Cristobal to return to Miami and become the head coach began. Miami hired Manny Diaz in December 2018 after Mark Richt suddenly retired. Diaz was hired for the Miami football program to have continuity after he was Hurricanes’ defensive coordinator.

Richt hired Miami native Diaz as the defensive coordinator when he returned to Miami in 2016. The former Hurricanes quarterback began was the first of now three head coaches through Cristobal who grew up in South Florida. Cristobal ended his first season at Oregon 9-4 and a 7-6 Red Box Bowl win over Michigan State.

In four seasons at Oregon, Cristobal led the Ducks to three Pac 12 North Titles, two conference championships and a Rose Bowl victory. The last three NFL Drafts have taken one player from Oregon in the top 15. Oregon averaged a freshmen class that ranked 10.5 nationally during the Cristobal era.

Miami will play at Texas A&M on September 17. Fisher and the Miami Basketball program made news this week when Alabama head coach Nick Saban criticized both for buying players. The comments were made in relation to how Miami, Jackson State and Texas &M were using Name, Image and Likeness.

Texas A&M signed the top-ranked freshman class in 2022 for the first time in program history. The comments directed towards Miami related to Kansas State transfer Nijel Pack signing a $400K NIL deal with Miami benefactor John Ruiz and his company Life Wallet. Saban clarified his comments on Thursday.

After being called out, Saban reportedly tried to connect with Fisher and Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders, but not anyone connected to the Miami athletic department. Fisher responded with his own comments about the criticism from Saban. It should make for an interesting week when Texas A&M is at Alabama.
