Buck Showalter: Mets will 'keep ducking and dodging and see if we can get to the endgame' after Scherzer injury

The Mets were able to pull out a dramatic walk-off win on Thursday, shortly after hearing about the loss of Max Scherzer.

Now, the challenge will be finding ways to continue to win on a consistent basis for the next two months, until they get their star pitcher back.

It will certainly be an obstacle, considering how sharp Scherzer had been before his oblique strain, but Buck Showalter is already familiar with navigating a rotation without an ace.

“Very much like we did with Jake [deGrom], with Trevor May, and like we’ve done without James McCann and Reid-Foley,” Showalter said. “It's a great opportunity for guys that we’re talking about bringing in here.”

David Peterson is likely to slide into a thin rotation that is still without deGrom and Tylor Megill, and the team signed veteran Trevor Cahill as a potential reinforcement to weather the current injury storm to the rotation. But New York is still in first place, and will work to maintain its hold atop the NL East without their three best starting pitchers.

“We’ve got some rough estimates about when we’ll get some of those guys back, but usually baseball throws you another curve somewhere along the way,” Showalter said.

“We'll keep ducking and dodging and see if we can get to the endgame.”
