Letter: Have you read the leaked Supreme Court opinion on Roe v. Wade?

John Coleman

In a recent article titled "What's next for abortion in Pa.?" the writer, Mike Argento, quotes two college administrators on the meaning of the leaked Supreme Court opinion that could overturn Roe v. Wade. In Argento's article Dr. John Fea, a history professor and outspoken critic of Donald Trump, cautioned that overturning Roe could lead to laws banning interracial marriage, contraception, gun ownership and other basic rights.

It appears that neither the writer, nor either of his sources, actually read Justice Samuel Alito's 98-page opinion. If they did read it, they withheld important parts of the opinion readers should have been told.

Here's some of what the court said: "It is time to heed the constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people's elected representatives ... abortion is a unique act because it terminates life, or potential life ... We emphasize that our decision concerns the constitutional right to an abortion and no other right. Nothing should be understood to cast doubt on precedents that do not concern abortion."

Readers on both sides of this issue should read the entire opinion before jumping to conclusions. That goes double for news writers like Mike Argento, who has done a disservice to readers.
