Love and intense fan devotion have won. After a brutal month of waiting, Netflix has announced that it will be renewing Heartstopper for not one, but two seasons. Bring on more Nick and Charlie fluffiness!

Though it’s taken a few weeks for the renewal to become official, it’s not surprising that Netflix wants more from this sweet rom-com. Since its premiere in April of 2022, Heartstopper has reached the Netflix Top Ten list in 54 countries and has a rare 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. But that’s not the only evidence of the show’s success. Creator Alice Oseman’s graphic novel of the same name, which serves as the source material for the series, has seen an 1700% increase in book sales in the U.S. The show has also generated a substantial presence on social media. Prior to the series’ launch, stars Kit Conner and Joe Locke’s Instagrams had around 100k followers. Now, Connor has 3.4 million followers and Locke has 2.5 million. The hashtag “heartstopper” has also amassed over 4.3 billion views on TikTok. By every metric we have available, it looks like this one is a “try” in the rugby sense of the word.

Heartstopper follows Charlie Spring (Locke), an out high schooler with a tight friend group who largely keeps to himself. But Charlie’s entire world changes when he falls head over heels for his classmate, Nick (Connor). Most of Season 1 followed Charlie and Nick’s will-they, won’t-they as Charlie tried to figure out if Nick was romantically interested in him. There was a lot of chaste flirting, a couple of fights, and a field day that was surprisingly charming. But in the end, Charlie and Nick ended up together. If Season 1’s finale can be believed, then Season 2 will likely follow Nick slowly coming out of the closet as he tells more and more people about his new boyfriend.

The great thing about this series is that it has room to grow. Oseman’s has written five volumes of Heartstopper, the latest of which is currently in development. Here’s hoping that means we’re going to eventually get five entire seasons of Nick looking like sweet puppy and Charlie fawning over him.
