UPPER CUMBERLAND – The latest free community dental health clinic conducted by Roane State’s dental hygiene students and volunteers was so successful that more events will be held in the fall, program director Melinda Gill said.
Residents from five counties received treatments ranging from dental cleanings to extractions, Gill said. “I am truly moved by the passion and care given by our dental hygiene students and mentors who truly made this clinic a success,” she added. “The patients that were treated were so grateful and moved by the kindness and care given to them.”
According to Gill, 10 second-year students and five first-year students participated in the clinic and were joined by five dental hygienists from the community who volunteered to serve as the students’ mentors.
A first-time volunteer dentist who offered his services commented “on how smoothly the clinic was run,” Gill said. Clinics are held in the dental hygiene department’s state-of-the-art facilities in the Coffey-McNally Building on the community college’s Oak Ridge Branch Campus.
