GARDEN CITY (WWJ) -- A fit of road rage ends with a woman's death in Wayne County.

At approximately 6:26 p.m. on Thursday, Garden City Police received calls about two cars that were traveling north on Middlebelt from Cherry Hill at a high rate of a speed.

According to a witness, a Dodge Ram and SUV went through a red light at Cherry Hill, proceeding northbound toward Ford Road.

Police then began receiving 911 calls reporting a shooting and traffic crash at Maplewood and Middlebelt.

Once authoritiess arrived on the scene of the crash, they found two cars that had been involved in a "serious" crash, with one still occupied by an injured driver.

Witnesses on scene reported that the driver of the Dodge Ram involved in the crash fled on foot.

Two officers began rendering aid to the injured woman and two other officers located the driver of the Dodge.

The Dodge Ram driver was arrested and is currently in police custody.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the Dodge was followed by an unknown SUV traveling northbound on Middlebelt into Garden City at high rates of speed while driving recklessly. As the vehicles were approaching Maplewood on Middlebelt, shots were fired from one of the vehicles at the other one.

The Dodge then collided with an unrelated vehicle stopped near the traffic light at Maplewood and Middlebelt. The crash injured the driver of the unrelated vehicle, and the driver was transported to a local hospital where WWJ's Ryan Marshall confirmed she later died.

Police have the Dodge driver in custody, but are still looking for the driver of the unknown SUV.

The Garden City Police Department is continuing to actively investigate theincident and have asked anyone with information to call 734-793-1700.
