More than 18,000 pounds of food was collected in Monroe County during the annual United States Postal Service (USPS) Food Drive.

The was the annual USPS Food Drive where people in communities all across America put food donations in their mailboxes to give to local food banks. Last week, postal service workers collect food donations in their trucks and the local food bank gathered them and then provided them to those in need.

The Monroe County Opportunity Program (MCOP), which operates the county-wide food bank, worked in cooperation with the downtown Monroe Post Office this past weekend to collect donations. This resulted in 18,366 pounds of food being collected.

“There are more than 15,000 people in Monroe County who are food insecure,” said Stephanie Kasprzak, MCOP Executive Director. “The postal food drive has provided critical food resources to meet our local needs for many years and we are so appreciative of this partnership, as well as members of our community who donate. This project is community action in its truest form.”
