The Savannah Cultural Arts Center (SCAC) has launched the Spotlight Facility Usage Program, a grant that will give a local nonprofit organization the opportunity to purchase rental space at a free or discounted rate from SCAC.

SCAC opened in 2019 and is welcoming what they hope will be the first full year after shutting down due to the pandemic in 2020.

Since its reopening in October 2021, the center has hosted many events, but SCAC's performing arts program coordinator David Higdon said there are still a lot of organizations that haven't had the opportunity to put on a performance or are not sure what the center has to offer.

"What we thought would be a great introductory way to accommodate more organizations and primarily nonprofits would be to offer this Spotlight Grant," Higdon said.

Subsidy amounts are based on the organization's most recent operating budget. Organizations with an operating budget under $50,000 will be able to rent the Ben Tucker Theatre or Studio Theatre for free. Those with an operating budget over $50,000 to $150,000 can rent the theatres at a discounted rate of $25 an hour. Budgets of $150,001 to $250,000 will be able to purchase rent at $50 an hour.

With the rental comes one performance either on a Friday or Saturday, one technical rehearsal, one dress rehearsal, an audio/visual technician, one front desk staff, on SCAC manager, one cleaning crew and use of the concessions area.

Patrons wait outside the Ben Tucker Theater at the Savannah Cultural Arts Center for a CinemaSavannah screening.

The grant doesn't just apply to performances.

"As long as it's anything that's culturally enriching to the community, it's something that we can put on. So whether that is a film screening, whether it is an artist or author lecture, or some sort of workshop — something that they may want to put on — it can apply for this Spotlight Grant. So, it's just really trying to provide opportunities for nonprofits to expand programming, outreach and community awareness."

Applications for the grant close on May 22 at 5 p.m. Notice of award to organizations will be sent out on June 1.

More guidelines can be found on the Spotlight Facility Use Program website.
