Tailwind Air will no longer be flying seaplane service from Boston Harbor to Provincetown Harbor, instead opting to fly from Boston Harbor to Provincetown Municipal Airport.

Since seaplanes are amphibious, they can take off and land on both water and land.

The seaplane service, which is the only commercial seaplane service in the Northeast, had been slated to fly from Boston Harbor to Provincetown Harbor starting May 25. However, due to several considerations, the route was switched to Provincetown Municipal Airport.

Tailwind Air will be providing seaplane service, as shown in this courtesy photo, from Boston Harbor to Provincetown Airport.

Co-founder of Tailwind Air Peter Manice said he preferred not to go into details about what those considerations were, though he said there were several.

Provincetown Harbormaster Don German said that Tailwind Air wasn’t denied access to the harbor, and that they simply chose to go to the airport instead. Tailwind Air still may charter private planes into the harbor, said German.

Despite the change in plans, Manice is still excited about the Provincetown-Boston route. He said that the service is still going to be what customers want, and that landing in the airport instead of the harbor gives Tailwind Air more versatility, especially with weather conditions.

He also mentioned that the flight from Boston Harbor to Provincetown Municipal Airport will be even shorter than the flight from Boston Harbor to Provincetown Harbor, which was set to be 35 minutes from dock-to-dock. The new route will be 20 minutes from Boston Harbor to Provincetown Municipal Airport.

In Boston, the service will leave from Fan Pier Marina

Tickets will start at $275 from Boston to Provincetown.

“Our customers who fly on our New York-to-Boston route have asked for this route, really, since the day we started, and we’re hoping to see it,” said Manice in a phone interview.

Starting May 25, there will be two flights from Boston to Provincetown on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays and one flight from Provincetown to Boston on Mondays and Tuesdays, he said. There is no service scheduled for Saturdays.
