Duck Fest returns, ducks still available for adoption

(Geronimo) – It’s time to get all your ducks in a row for this Saturday’s annual Duck Fiesta and Rubber Duck Race. After weeks of fundraising among students and families, the invitation is now out for the rest of the community to adopt a duck for the annual Navarro Education Foundation fundraiser. The event which will dump hundreds and hundreds of yellow rubber ducks into the waters at Walnut Springs Park in downtown Seguin will get underway at 11 a.m. Saturday.

NEF President Cindy Gibbens says the various campuses have been challenging each other to see who could adopt the most ducks. She says each of those ducks will now float to the finish line in hopes of snagging a great prize for their owner.

“The ducks are available for purchase to adopt at $5 per duck and they will be available at the event. You can also go to our website, our Facebook page and there’s a form in there if you want to adopt some ducks. So, either way, they are still available. We just finished our Principal’s Challenge so the duck purchases wont’ go toward that any longer but we will still absolutely welcome you to adopt a duck and the ducks are numbered and if your number is pulled on Saturday when we do the duck race, you’ll be one of the first 30 winners to get a prize that are donated by some wonderful sponsors as well,” said Gibbens.

Gibbens says in addition to the duck race, the community is invited out for a morning of food, games, and other family fun.

“We will have some games for the kiddos and there will be small prizes for those as well. There’s usually a tug-o-war between some of our high school kiddos. We also have the Navarro High School Jazz Band performing in the middle of the event and some of our sponsors will have exhibits and they’ll just kind of be able to provide some information about what their businesses are about. We also have Kona Ice coming out and then our junior high cheerleaders come out selling hot dogs, bottled water and some chips,” said Gibbens.

Proceeds from the event go to support the foundation which funds educational grants for classes across the district. Ducks can be adopted at the event.  Cost is $5 a duck. Ducks will be available until 11 a.m. The race will follow at 11:30 a.m.
