GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - May is Foster Care Awareness Month, which brings attention to the need for foster parents in the tri-city area.

KVC Nebraska estimates that, on any given day, three thousand kids are in foster care, but it’s the kids not in a home that worries foster care agencies the most.

Especially for agencies like Heartland Casa, whose executive director said, locally, there is a great need for homes to place kids in.

“Unfortunately in Hall County we have a great need for foster families, there have been a lot of children who have been removed from their homes and they are looking for a safe place to be and we hope that people can reach out to foster services to see if they qualify to be a foster family.” Erin Howe said.

Even outside Hall County, Building Blocks Foster care reports there is a need for foster homes state-wide.

“Just for Kearney, Hastings, and Grand Island, I have 23 active kids needing to be placed. Statewide, it’s 75 more,” Building Blocks placement specialist Cody VanWinkle said. “Some kids can be placed...say, a kid out of Lincoln can’t find a home in Lincoln, they’ll say can anyone outside of Lincoln take them. So that would be a situation where they would say yeah, they can put them in Grand Island.”
