Deadly shooting in Sunbury, police looking for suspect

SUNBURY, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) —A manhunt is underway for a homicide suspect in Northumberland County.

Sunbury Police are looking for the man they say shot and killed another man in a convenience store Thursday afternoon.

Sunbury Law Enforcement held a press conference at the station Thursday night. They say several people were inside the Penn Jersey Mart when the suspect started shooting.

Police identified the suspect as 23-year-old Ajani Uhuru of Sunbury. Officers say he is still at large and considered armed and dangerous.

At 4:15 Thursday afternoon, Sunbury Police responded to a reported shooting inside Penn Jersey Mart on North 4th Street. Police found 30-year-old Kareem Jakes with several gunshot wounds.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators spoke with witnesses and reviewed surveillance footage. They say they learned Uhuru shot Jakes after a brief altercation and fled the scene in his car which was later recovered in Sunbury.

So far, Uhuru is being charged with homicide.

“The best thing for Ajani is to turn himself in. He knows a lot of us here, we’re very fair. We just want him to come in, get his side of the story and basically end this peacefully,” explained Chief Bradley Hare, Sunbury Police Department.

Multiple state and local law enforcement agencies are still searching for Uhuru. Anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact the Northumberland County 911 Center.
