We don't always choose our neighbors, but as one San Antonio woman found out, you can take action if the people living next door become nuisance neighbors.
Fox San Antonio's Problem Solver Darian Trotter stepped in to help.
"I'm paying too much to be scared and fearful," said Roslyn Bates.
For the past several months, Roslyn Bates has been living in fear; dealing with rowdy neighbors who she says are caught on camera checking for unlocked doors.
"You can hear them on the camera saying, 'Oh the door is locked, what do you want to do.' So they're conspiring and I opened my door and went out there and let them have it," said Bates.
She believes at least twelve men and women are living in the problem apartment on her floor.
She says she got confirmation they subletting from a neighbor who's actually on the lease.
"It's very, very weird," said Bates.
Door camera video appears to show one of the men kick in the door after someone inside apparently refuses to answer.
"Their demeanor doesn't look like they're up to anything good," said Bates.
Even though she's posted this sign letting them know they're on camera, it didn't stop this man from relieving himself; nor did it stop people in and out of the problem apartment from checking to see if her door was unlocked.
Reporter Darian Trotter asked, "What do you think they're after? Honestly, probably whatever they can get to sell," Bates replied. " I'm thinking these people are on drugs or whatever the case is."
She says she's tried without success to get property managers at Newport Apartments to address the issue.
She's also tried and failed to be transferred to another apartment.
"If I can't be transferred then they need to go," said Bates.
After officers were called and Child Protective Services, because of the youngsters living with the problem neighbors, we reached out to property managers about safety concerns, and the apparent lease violations.
In a statement, Newport Apartments said, "We are not able to comment on specific resident issues. The safety of our community is our top priority."
Soon after, a notice of lease violations was posted on the door of the problem neighbors.
They were cited for refusing to allow entry... Disturbing others... Trash outside the door... And unauthorized occupant.
Fast-forward. Posted on the same door, we found an eviction notice ordered by Bexar County naming the person on the lease and all other occupants.
"This needs to stop," Bates said. "It needs to stop."
It was a process but in the end, the person on the lease was evicted along with all of the men and women living there.
