Could Yankees shop Joey Gallo before trade deadline?

All things considered, the New York Yankees endured a pretty lousy Thursday afternoon at the Baltimore Orioles.

New York relief pitcher Chad Green exited the game after he made just 11 pitches due to what's initially being called right forearm discomfort, and he's set to be re-evaluated in New York on Friday. Insult was then added to injury when Baltimore's Anthony Santander ended things with a walkoff three-run home run:

Despite all of that, the 28-10 Yankees remain atop the overall MLB standings but could nevertheless enter the summer months shopping one of their own to would-be buyers.

New York's decision to trade with the Texas Rangers for two-time All-Star slugger Joey Gallo last July continues to look like a massive mistake ahead of this year's Memorial Day holiday. While New York general manager Brian Cashman insisted last week he was "not worried about" Gallo's struggles, Mark Feinsand of the league's website reports that the 28-year-old who can hit free agency after the season may find himself on the trade block before this year's deadline.

"Gallo slashed .167/.298/.383 with 18 home runs and 29 RBIs in his first 90 games with New York, including .182/.289/.343 with five home runs and seven RBIs in 33 games this season," Feinsand noted before Thursday's action.

"'There’s some Sonny Gray feel to that one,' an NL executive said, referring to the All-Star pitcher who never found his groove in the Bronx. 'He’s been a little better lately. If he continues to struggle it wouldn’t surprise me to see them try to flip him.'"

It was reported last month the Yankees talked to the San Diego Padres earlier this spring about a trade involving Gallo. One wonders if such talks could resume if Gallo doesn't start producing at the plate before June comes to an end.
