Police in Tuscaloosa have arrested a fifth person and the third adult in connection to a shooting that seriously injured a 3-year-old child earlier this week.

The shooting took place this Monday, May 16th, near the pool of the Village at Brook Meadows, an apartment complex on Tuscaloosa's Hargrove Road.

Two groups of young men allegedly opened fire on one another at the apartments and although no one in either group was injured in the exchange, a stray bullet struck a 3-year-old who was swimming in the pool. Police said the victim was not connected in any way to the people doing the shooting.

A group of suspects fled the area on foot, and another group took off in a vehicle that police were able to stop near the University Mall on McFarland Boulevard very soon after the incident.

Since the shooting, five people including two juveniles have been arrested and charged in connection to the shooting.

Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, announced the fifth arrest to local media Thursday afternoon.

The suspect, 19-year-old Kevonte Marteze Griffin, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of first-degree assault. He has been booked in the Tuscaloosa County Jail combined $220,000 bond.

Two other adults face similar charges, and two juveniles have been arrested in this case but recently passed state law prohibits the VCU from sharing their identities or mugshots.

After announcing the arrest, Kennedy said the investigation into the mayhem is still ongoing and more criminal charges may follow.
