Charles Roger Grantland, Jr.

Grantland

Mr. Charles “Chuck” roger Grantland, Jr., age 60, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2022 at Atmore Nursing Center, Atmore, Ala., following a brief illness. He was born in Mobile Ala. He moved many times with his family and lived in Alabama, Maine and Canada. He did not have an easy life. He was born with a genetic condition “neurofibromatosis,” which most likely contributed to his shortened life span. He was very bright, but due to his condition, he could not speak clearly, read, or write. Despite these obstacles, he lived on his own for a good portion of his life, held down a job, was married, and was active in his church with the support of his family and the community in Elberta, Ala. He loved fishing, watching TV, especially westerns and documentaries and helping his mother and step-father at their church and RV Park. He has two cats and lived on his own in Elberta. He held a long-time job at The Road Cafe until a stroke in July, 2021.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Deanna Brimicombe of Canada; his father, Charles Roger Grantland Senior of Florida, and his brother, John “Steve” Grantland of Alabama.

Mr. Grantland is survived by his mother, Joanne McNeil (David Lee) of Ala.; Step-mother, Vicki Grantland of Fla.; sisters, Deborah Benton (Michael) and Danna Freeman (Terry), all of Ala., Karen Jeffords (Tom) of Fla., Becky Grantland (Steve) of Alaska, Anne Weinshel (Matthew) of N. C.; brother, Scott Grantland of Ala.

Ronald Louis Stedman

Mr. Ronald Louis Stedman, age 82, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2022 in Schoharie, N.Y. He was born and raised in North Stonington, CT. He lived in Atmore, Ala., then upstate N.Y. resided there for seventeen years before returning to Atmore in 1996. He served 9 years in the United States Marine Corp. where he attained the rank of sergeant while serving as a helicopter mechanic and crew chief. He also served aboard the U.S.S Boxer. He was honorably discharged in 1966. During his working years he worked various jobs in Brewton, Ala., Flomaton, Ala. owned and operated Five Star Lawn Care in Atmore, Ala. Above all of these professions, he drove tractor trailer as an owner operator and team driver for over 40 years. He was named a member of The Million Mile Club with no violations or accidents throughout his 40 plus years career. He was known for his quick wit, sense of humor, generosity, as well as his caring and nurturing nature.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of fifty-six years, Marion Petty Stedman; mother, Susie Stedman; one brother, George Stedman and one nephew, Kevin Stedman.
Mr. Stedman is survived by three children, Lawrence Keith Stedman of Flomaton, Ala., Kimberly Sue (William) Carter of McDavid, Fla. and Lenorah James (Marty) Pierce, of Schoharie; six grandchildren, Jeanne Marie Stedman, Jason Lust, his namesake, Ronnie Stedman, Josiah Carter, Marty Pierce, Jr. and Marissa Hadsell, as well as four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday, May 26, 2022 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Petty- Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes, LLC.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 27, 2022 at 11 a.m.  at Petty- Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes, LLC with Pastor Jim Stickle officiating. Burial will follow at Ray’s Chapel Cemetery.

Walter M. Butler, Sr.     

Butler

Mr. Walter M. Butler, Sr., age 75, of Walnut Hill, Fla., passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2022 in Pensacola, Fla. He was a native of Bayou La Batre, Ala., residing in the Atmore, Ala. and Walnut Hill area for the past twenty-three years. He had a career in lumber sales and newspaper advertising. In his business trips all over South Alabama and Northwest Florida, he made friends everywhere he went. His outgoing personality and his gift of being able to talk to anyone, at any time and any place, assured that he never met a stranger. These contacts resulted in numerous friendships that lasted a lifetime. He volunteered his talents by holding office or working with the following organizations: The Boy Scouts of America, Jaycees, United Cerebral Palsy of Mobile, United Cerebral Palsy of Alabama, Leadership Atmore, Atmore Lions Club, American Cancer Society, Relay for Life and the First Baptist Church of Atmore. He was always willing to serve in any way possible.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cordell Lee and Newton Butler and brother, Charles Sprinkle.

Mr. Butler is survived by his wife, Elsie Nall Butler; sons, Walter (Beth)  Butler, Jr. of Springville, Ala., Rhett (Heidi) Butler of Grand Bay, Al., and Whitney (Holly) Butler of Semmes, Ala.; step-son, Eric (Angela) Stuart of Walnut Hill; step-daughter, Rebecca (Blaine) Durbin of Spanish Fort, Ala.;  brother, Carl (Carol) Butler of Mobile, Ala.; sisters, Pat Stewart and Darla (Jess) Bryant of Lititz, Penn. and Sherri Sprinkle of Mobile; ten grandchildren; 

A memorial service will be held Monday, May 23, 2022 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Atmore with Dr. Kevin Garrett, officiating.

The family will receive friends Monday, May 23, 2022 from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Atmore.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to United Cerebral Palsy at 3058 Dauphin Square Connector, Mobile, Alabama  36607, First Baptist Church Atmore Children’s Program or a charity of your choice.

Roger Dale Alverson

Mr. Roger Dale “The Candyman” Alverson, age 70, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Friday, May 20, 2022 at his residence. He was born to Elmer and Hazel Abbott Alverson. He was a retired correctional officer with Fountain Correctional Facility.  He was a member of Cross Point Baptist Church in Atmore.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Alverson is survived by his wife, Patsy J. Alverson; his sons, David Brian (Denise) Waller of Flomaton, Ala. and Daniel Lee Waller of Atmore, AL; his brothers, Mike (Sadie) Alverson and Danny (Rose) Alverson; his sister, Janise Alverson; six grandchildren; fifteen great- grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at 3 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Atmore with Pastor Guy Heath officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Houston Waller, Shawn McKinley, Kevin Slack, Jason Macks, Jerry Haskew, Adam Waller, Ray Hines and Chad Alverson.

Harold Reggie Comalander

Mr. Harold Reggie Comalander, age 58, passed away Friday, April 29, 2022 in Largo, Fla. He was lifelong resident of McDavid, Fla. He was a brick mason for many years. He enjoyed going fishing and hunting.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James D. and Beulah Bethea Comalander; three brothers, Darriell Comalander, Chris Comalander, David Comalander and one sister, Georgia Prescott.

Mr. Comalander is survived by his two daughters of Pensacola, Fla.; five brothers, James Edward (Lizabeth) Comalander and Larry Dove (Hazel) Comalander all of McDavid, Jerry Thomas (Bobbie) Comalander of Dothan, Ala., Lamar Oliver (Patsy) Comalander of Lockhart, Ala. and Allen Victor Comalander, of Frisco City, Ala.; three sisters, Eleanor Yvonne Stuckey of Century, Fla., Melba Louise (Burrley) Townson of Poplar Dell, Fla. Mary Jane (Dempsey) Hall of Davisville, Fla.; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral service will be held Sunday, May 22, 2022 at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel funeral Home, LLC. Burial will follow at Christian Home Cemetery.

Gaylen Hood Lambert

Mrs. Gaylen Hood Lambert, age 77, passed away Friday, May 20, 2022, in Mobile, Ala. She was born in Atmore, Ala. and resided most of her life in Goodway, Ala. She retired from Vanity Fair Mills with many years of employment. She was a member of Goodway Baptist Church. She enjoyed gaming in both Biloxi and Wind Creek Casino’s with her sisters. She also enjoyed dancing and working in her flower gardens. She loved her dogs and cats.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Curtis and Alma Lilly Hood; one son, James Kevin Lambert; one sister, Sue Hood Chunn; sister-in law, Robert and Sue Edge; brother-in law, Buddy Baker; mother and father-in-law, Lindsey and Clemis Lambert.

Mrs. Lambert is survived by her loving husband of fifty-four  years, Rodger Lambert of Goodway; two sons, Lowell Lambert of Monroeville, Ala., Joel (Shelia) Lambert of Daphne, Ala.; one sister, Martha Jean Baker of Atmore ; three grandchildren, Michael James Lambert, Lindsey Lambert, Lucas Lambert, one brother-in-law, TL Chunn of Uriah, Ala.; other relatives, and friends.

Willie B. Austin

Mr. Willie B. Austin, age 80, of Elmhurst, N.Y., formerly of Perdido, Ala., passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2022 in New York.  Funeral service will be held Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Morning Dove Baptist Church, Perdido with Rev. Lawrence Cox, Pastor. Officiating. Interment will follow in Morning Dove Cemetery.

Dorothy Russell Peter

Ms. Dorothy Russell Peter of Atmore, Ala., passed away Friday, May 20, 2022 in Piedmont Rockdale Hospital, in Conyers, Ga.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 1 p.m. at Zion Star A.M.E. Church. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.

Earl Sanders

Pastor Earl Sanders, age 68, of Castleberry, Ala., passed away Monday, May 9, 2022 at D.W. McMillian Memorial Hospital. He was born to the late Ola Mae Ball Sanders and James Sanders. He was a dedicated and faithful member and pastor of the Church of the Living God (C.W.F.F.) Temple #122 until his health failed. He graduated from Conecuh County High School he attended Reid State Technical studying Industrial Electronics. He retired from Med South. He served as a football and basketball coach for the Castleberry Blue Devils.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Michael Sanders.

Mr. Sanders is survived by his wife, Priscilla Ann Sanders; children, Michelle Sanders of Evergreen, Ala, Marsha Sanders of Castleberry and Earl M. Sanders of Panama City, Fla.; six brothers, Willie (Linda) Sanders of Galt, Calif., Billy (Annette) Sanders of Hayward, Calif., Leon Sanders of Montgomery, Ala., David (Brenda) Sanders of Fresno, Calif., Calvin Sanders of Castleberry and Henry Sanders of Oakland, Calif.; three sisters, Jackie Sanders of Marietta, Ga., Clara (Roosevelt) Stallworth of Montgomery, Carolyn (Johnny) Miller of Columbus, Ga.; four grandchildren, Arianna Sanders, Markayla Booker, Antayvia Booker, JaMarkus Booker; five great-grandchildren, Kyson Lewis, Kylie Lewis, Keilan Richardson, Rylee Booker, Ariyan Richardson; five aunts; two uncles; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Unity in Christ Outreach Ministries with Vice-Chief Bishop Aaron Scruggs officiating. Interment followed at Second Marietta Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Castleberry.

Pallbearers were his brothers and relatives.

Gayle Odom Johnson

Ms. Gayle Odom Johnson, age 69, of Huxford, Ala., passed away Sunday, May 22, 2022 in Fairhope, Ala. She was born to the late Jim and Jeanette Odom. She was a longtime employee of Poarch Band of Creek Indians, serving as editor of The Poarch Creek News. She was a supporter and participant in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, President of the VFW Auxiliary Post 7016 in Atmore and a member of the Poarch Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ben Johnson and her brother, Joe Odom.

Ms. Johnson is survived by her children, Holly (Robert) Carnley and their children Katelyn and Jacob; two sons, James Johnson and Caiden Johnson; siblings, Claude Odom, Eddie (Faye) Odom, Tommy (Voncile) Odom, Jackey (Shelia) Odom, Johnny (Sandra) Odom, Carolyn “Sussie” (Gary) Posey, Donald (Charlene) Odom, Arthur (Terrie) Odom, Isabell Odom, Jerry (Tangie) Odom, Joyce (Debbie) Fisher, Jenny Hutto and Linda (Tim) Odom, along with numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 26, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Atmore Memorial Chapel in Atmore, Ala. with Bro. Josh Odom officiating. Interment will follow at Pineview Cemetery in Pineview, Ala.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 25, 2022 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Atmore Memorial Chapel.
