SOMERSET, Ky. (WYMT) - On Thursday, state and local leaders joined officials with Kinetic by Windstream to unveil a new piece of artwork in Somerset.

“In Somerset and Pulaski County, we have never fully paid tribute to our veterans, the umbrella of freedom that they provide for us,” said Chris Girdler, President and CEO of the Somerset/Pulaski Economic Development Authority.

The officials were joined by veterans for unveiling on the Kinetic by Windstream local retail store in honor of Military Appreciation Month.

“It’s gonna be a great symbol of our freedom and our hope here in Pulaski County and in the United States,” said Steve Kelley, Pulaski County Judge-Executive.

The mural will overlook the veterans park across the street, which will be completed in a few months.

“We have various monuments and statues, but we actually don’t have a park where people can spend time in, reflecting on their service, paying tribute to those who have come before us and those who have served,” added Girdler.

The artist behind the mural, Jordan Justice, said he is happy to have a role in this military appreciation project.

“This is huge to me,” said Justice. “Anything I can do to use my art to make, like an impact in an area this is... I mean, I couldn’t ask for any better way to represent my art or just me as an artist.”

Leaders also gathered letters for local veterans at the event.
