Celtic star Giorgos Giakoumakis reveals retirement plans

Giorgos Giakoumakis is a man in blistering form right now, with the Greek striker arriving at Celtic last summer after topping the Eredivisie scoring charts with VVV-Venlo in the 2020/21 campaign. It was not a great start for him at Parkhead though as he spent the majority of the first half of this season out on the sidelines, dealing with one injury or another.

On top of that, there were question marks about whether he was a one season wonder, as his record before the incredible campaign with VVV-Venlo, was not particularly impressive.

Giakoumakis has proved a lot of doubters wrong since the turn of the year as he has been one of the most in-form players in all of Scotland, and ended up topping the Premiership scoring charts despite playing in barely half the games.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Giakoumakis has scored 17 goals in 29 appearances, although those have combined for just 1471 minutes of football. Thus, it will be interesting to see the kind of numbers he can put up when he plays a full season without constant injury problems.

Celtic star reveals his retirement plans

Giakoumakis has shed some light on how he hopes to end his career, and that is at OFI Crete. As reported by Neakriti (via 67 Hail Hail), the Celtic star said:

"“Yes, of course it is true [on wanting a future move to OFI]. I was very close to signing with OFI as a free agent and not on loan.“I really wanted to but in the end AEK decided to keep me on the roster. I did not have much room, so I agreed. I would ideally like to end my career with the team I love, OFI.”"

Thus, it looks like Giakoumakis would like to finish his career, while playing in front of his hometown fans.

Of course, that seems to be quite some distance away considering the incredible form that he has been in in recent times.

One could argue that he has been the most important part of Celtic’s push for the title after the winter break. And still just 27 years of age, he should have plenty of football left in the tank before he has to think about finishing up his playing career.
