Lady ‘Cats pile up 11 hits –
GLADEVILLE – Taelor Chang and Kristen Smith slugged home runs to power Wilson Central to a 7-2 win over Beech in Wednesday’s Region 5-4A championship game.
The Lady Wildcats upped their record to 35-10 and earned the right to host a 4A Sectional game Friday at 6 p.m. against Centennial with the winner advancing to TSSAA Spring Fling next week in Murfreesboro.
Beech took a 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI single by Greer Huffine that drove in Brinn Fathauer, who had reached on a single.
Wilson Central responded by scratching out two in the bottom of the frame thanks to a pair of sacrifice bunts and an infield error.
The Lady Bucs tied the score in the top of the third, only to see Wilson Central score three in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer by Chang (her 20th of the season) and a clutch two-out RBI single by Maddison Stowell.
Central added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth as Smith belted a two-run home run, scoring Chang who had reached on a single.
Kenzie Miller and Kyleigh Pitzer shared pitching duties for Wilson Central with Pitzer earning the decision in relief. The pair combined to scatter eight hits and strike out five.
Keyleigh Midgett ripped an RBI double and Huffine added a run scoring single for Beech while Ella Bishop finished 2-for-3 with a double and a single.
Brianna Faulk went the distance for the Lady Bucs, surrendering 11 hits while striking out three and walking one.
Beech is scheduled to play at Summit High in Friday’s Class 4A Sectional.
