Wausa’s boys golf team is headed to State

WAUSA – The Wausa varsity boys golf team is going to take a swing at a state title.

The Vikings qualified for the 2022 Nebraska School Activities Association Boys Golf State Championships as a team on May 16 after finishing as the runner-up in the District D-3 Golf Tournament at their home course of Rolling Hills Country Club.

With a team score of 357, Wausa placed second behind Pender, which won the district contest with a 346. Neligh-Oakdale earned the third spot at districts with a 362.

Shane Anderson, the principal of grades 5-12 for Wausa Public Schools, told the board of education on May 16 that the top three teams in the district contest qualified for the state championships.

Wausa senior Michael Vanness and junior Jaxon Claussen qualified for the state tournament as individuals as well.

Vanness placed second overall at the district contest with a score of 82 – two strokes behind Creighton junior Gage Burns’ 80 – while Claussen finished in seventh overall with a score of 88.

Wausa senior Jonathan Nissen recorded a 92, junior Tug Dawson earned a 95 and freshman Vincent Vanness ended up with a 109.

Under the guidance of head coach Chris Haberer and assistant coach Capp Bengston, the Vikings will travel to Lake Maloney Golf Club in North Platte to compete May 24- 25 for a state title in Class D.

Anderson noted the Wausa golfers will travel to North Platte May 23 and have a chance to play a practice round on the course if the weather cooperates.

“They’ll compete Tuesday and Wednesday,” he said. “It’s 18 holes each day.”

Wausa Public Schools has scheduled an end-of-the-school-year pep rally for 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 18, to celebrate the state qualifiers in golf and track as well as recognize retiring staff members.

“We’ve got a few other awards to give out,” Anderson said. “We’re going to do our retirement plaques for our retirees. The public is welcome. If you’d like to come, we’d love to have you.”
