Carlsbad prepares for Memorial Day with parade, ceremony

Dale Janway
Mayor, City of Carlsbad

Last February, our community and the entire state mourned the passing of New Mexico State Police Officer Darian Jarrott, who was killed in the line of duty. Officer Jarrott was very well known and respected in the Carlsbad community. He joined New Mexico State Police in 2015.

Next Monday, at 3 p.m., we will be paying tribute to Officer Jarrott and other officers from Eddy County who have died in the line of duty. This includes members of the Carlsbad Police Department, Eddy County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police.

The Carlsbad and Eddy County Law Enforcement Memorial has been set up in front of the Janell Whitlock Municipal Complex, and that’s where the ceremony will take place. This beautiful memorial was funded through private donors, who all wish to remain anonymous.  Special thanks to Jameson Lucas, with the Southeast New Mexico Historical Society, for helping us with photos.

New Mexico State Police, the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office and the Carlsbad Police Department will all participate in the ceremony.  Law enforcement is an extremely dangerous job, and these brave men and women put themselves at risk every day to make sure we are safe. We hope you will join us for this ceremony at 3 p.m. Monday, May 23 at 114 N. Halagueno St. Light refreshments will be served after the ceremony.

Thank you to ConocoPhillips for hosting a leadership roundtable on Tuesday. Gabrielle Gerholt, Director of New Mexico Government Affairs, gave a wonderful presentation. Special thanks to Stakeholder Relations Advisor Tina Tiffany for putting everything together. It was especially great to hear about ConocoPhillips investment in the community, and the fact that the company encourages its employees to volunteer and participate.

New Mexico is fighting one of the largest wildfire outbreaks in the state’s history.  ConocoPhillips is donating $100K in support of New Mexico wildfire disaster relief efforts. This donation will be allocated to the American Red Cross and All Together New Mexico Fund in support of emergency shelter, food and water distribution and other critical services
