MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A shooting in the Town of Christiansburg caused an elementary school to shelter in place Thursday morning.

Town officials say the Christiansburg Police Department responded to a shooting at a McDonald’s off Roanoke Street at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 19.

According to Brenda Drake, director of communications and community relations for Montgomery County Public Schools, police asked Falling Branch Elementary School to bring all children inside during the investigation. This shelter in place lasted for about 10 minutes.

“There was no reason to believe that a suspect or weapon was near school property. Bringing students inside was a precaution to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” said Drake.

Police found one person injured with a non-life-threatening self-inflicted injury. Law enforcement says they secured the scene, the weapon was recovered and there is no threat to the community.

The school resumed normal operations. This incident remains under investigation.
