(Aurora, Ind.) – Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks once said “the only way to prove you are a good sport is to lose.”
The South Dearborn High School baseball team (15-6, 9-4 in the EIAC) hasn’t done a lot of losing this year, but their most recent loss showed their sportsmanship.
On Monday, Batesville captured the EIAC Championship with a hard fought 3-2 win over South Dearborn.
The Knights handled that loss with grace as they were awarded with an Exemplary Sportsmanship Award from the IHSAA on Thursday.
The home plate umpire of Monday’s game said, “The South Dearborn coaching staff and players should be complimented on their performance, attitude, and perseverance. Not all calls went their way, they lost a tough hard-fought game, and as an official I have never heard so many yes and no sirs, thank yous, and polite kids.”

Seniors Drew Probst, Sean Sohmer, Corbin McHenry and Reese Willoughby accepted the Sportsmanship Award on behalf of the entire team.
South Dearborn is back in action tonight against Batesville.
The Knights will also square off with Batesville in the first round of sectional play next Thursday.
