Willie Nelson and Julio Iglesias might’ve been an unlikely duo back in the 80’s, but they ended up with a #1 hit with their duet “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before.”

And on this day in 1984, the duo was topping the country charts with their hit single.

The song was written by Hal David and Albert Hammond, and originally recorded by Hammond in 1975 on his album 99 Miles From L.A. Julio included it on his 1984 album 1100 Bel Air Place.

It even peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, which was one of two charting hits Willie and Julio had together, with their duet “Spanish Eyes” later peaking at #8 in 1988.

Willie introduced his friend at a live performance years back, telling the story of how he decided to collaborate with Julio (in the most incredible t-shirt I’ve ever seen):

“A few months ago, I was in London, and when I turned the radio on, I heard a wonderful voice. And I said to my wife, I said, ‘Who is that singing?’

She said, ‘That’s Julio Iglesias, a Spanish singer. He’s become one of the most popular stars in the world.’ And I said, ‘How can that be? I’ve never done a duet with him.’

No, I’m just kidding. I thought Julio’s voice was great, and the story has a happy ending, because we really did get together and here’s the result.”

And the rest, as they say, is history.
