Fremont County will be represented well this weekend at the CHSAA State Track & Field Championships.

The Florence Huskies will have six athletes competing at the three-day event.

“It’s been a good season,” Jeremy Nix, Florence’s head Track & Field coach said. “We were able to go to some meets and bring home a couple of first place finishes and the kids have worked hard throughout this year and that’s all you could ever ask for.”

Sophomore Gunner Busetti will compete in the shot put this weekend, while seniors Rylan Liddell and Catherine Turner will compete in the discus at state.

The Huskies boys 4 X 100-meter team will also be in action. The team is made up of Liddell, sophomore Luguse Nuss, and juniors Lincoln Nix and Levi Paxton. Nix will also be competing in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles over the weekend.

Nuss, who also plays football for Florence, will have a busy weekend. Aside from the 4 X 100-meter relay, he will also be competing in the long jump, 100-meter dash, and 200-meter dash.

Coach Nix is also the head coach of the Huskies football team, and he has been pleased with Nuss in both sports this year.

“He’s an awesome kid and he has great character,” Coach Nix said about Nuss. “He’s a pleasure to be around. He does good stuff in the classroom, and it’s always fun to have him in multiple sports. He works hard in the weight room, and he works hard to improve each one of his events.”

Coach Nix also talked about his expectations for his athletes this weekend.

“The expectation is just to try to compete at a high level and do what we can to be great up there,” he said. “The main thing is to go up there and have fun because not everybody gets to do this, so they need to enjoy it and remember it.”

Coach Nix also mentioned that the athlete’s health is the most important thing heading into the state meet.

“We got to kind of work on their bodies a little bit,” he said. “We’re getting through the end of the season and all that stuff so we got to heal up and make sure that their bodies are in the best shape that they can be at this time. The main thing is just get their body in a good position where it feels good and you can push it to the limits on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.”

For Cañon City’s boys’ team, senior Cornelius Henderson will compete in the 400-meter dash, senior Nathan Pontius will run the 800-meter, Andrew Hakes, a senior will compete in the 110-meter hurdles, and sophomore Wyatt Turner will be competing in the high jump this weekend.

On the girl’s side, sophomore Alissa Rall will run the 400-meter for the Tigers.

Cañon City’s 4 X 400-meter relay team will also be in action this weekend, as well as the 4 X 800-meter relay team.

The CHSAA State Track & Field Championships will run all day Thursday through Saturday at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.
