GF County starts construction bond process

By Doug Barrett May 19, 2022 | 7:51 AM

The Grand Forks County Commission this week approved a bond resolu-tion to fund expansion of the jail and a new juvenile detention center.

The board action sets in motion a publication date and a 60 day notice for issuing the bonds. The county has capped the project cost at $30 million dollars – but the bonds could total $35 million. Commission Chair Tom Falck says “We talked about $30 million on the project.  This request is for $35…not that we have to go there…but you can always go below…but you can’t go up.”

The bond would be repaid through tax levies or a local sales tax. The county is currently working on a survey of residents to help gauge sup-port for enacting a Home Rule Charter. Home Rule would give the county the sales tax option. Voters could see the issue on the November ballot.
