New Motorola phone owner here with an Edge 30 that I bought in the UK from PC Word Currys

First impressions is I am impressed. Although it came with a backing case there is no screen protector. I assume being a new model aftermarket cases and/or screen protectors are not yet readily available, a search on Amazon results in mostly Edge 30 Pro that seems to be a different size and even then many show them with different lens layout so I fear I will order the wrong one; any suggestions?

The only thing I am not sure on the phone is the camera uploads all pictures to Google Photos, I can't seem to store them locally and choose what I upload to Google photos.

Welcome to Android Central! I removed the embedded links to Motorola and Currys, since they raised red flags in the forum software (that watches for spam links).

You can always turn off Backup & Sync for Google Photos in its app settings. Photos will still be saved locally to the /DCIM/Camera directory, and can be viewed using Google Photos or any other gallery app. If you like the Google Photos interface but don't want to backup to the cloud, you could try Gallery Go, which is Google's stripped-down version of Google Photos.

No worries about removing links they were just to clarify the phone model.

When I set up the phone this afternoon it prompted importing everything from my old Sony Xperia, I assumed Music and apps, my fear was in doing so it may have deleted the default camera gallery which then resulted in 'Google Photos' being set up us the a the camera default gallery. I have downloaded a 'Gallery Go' as suggested.

I have turned off 'Backup & Sync for Google Photos' in its app settings but the camera-gallery defaults to it, the pictures do show at stored local in "Internal shared storage\Pictures\.thumbnails". I can sign out of 'Google photos' but as soon as I sign in again all the images populate. I have discovered if I use 'Gallery Go' to upload a picture to 'Google Photos' (even though it's all ready synced and showing in 'GP') if I then delete it in 'Gallery Go' the image will remain in 'Google Photos'; previously it deleted the image everywhere. Ideally I'd was both expecting and hoping that as with every smart phone I have ever used I'd have a locally stored-viewed gallery that I could then choose what to upload to 'Google Photos'.

I think Google Photos is the gallery app that Motorola preinstalls on its phones, so transferring data from another phone wouldn't have eliminated some other gallery app. Since it's the stock gallery app, that's what the Camera app will default to.

When you say that all of the images populate when you sign into Google Photos, do you mean photos that are backed up to your Google Photos cloud?

If you don't want to save your photos to Google Photos in the cloud, then you could always delete all of the photos that are currently saved there, and keep Backup & Sync turned off.

Keep in mind that in Google Photos, the main feed includes all photos that are saved locally on the phone AND all photos that are saved to your Google Photos cloud. If you want to use it more like a traditional gallery app, then tap the Library button at the bottom right, then View All under Photos On Device.

Thanks for the response, I am a bit happier now I believe it's not me doing something wrong when setting up.

I can 'use without an account' and the pictures just load into an unnamed 'Google Photos' gallery, but as soon as I sign back into the 'Google Photos' with my email address the pictures sync. Yes I can see the locally stored pictures via the "Library button at the bottom right, then View All under Photos On Device", they also appear in the main photos thread on my device.

"If you don't want to save your photos to Google Photos in the cloud, then you could always delete all of the photos that are currently saved there, and keep Backup & Sync turned off", Yes I guess that is what I had in effect been used to all these years; everything changes, I am 58 and starting to struggle with tech lol

I have also emailed a couple of potential phone case suppliers via Amazon that will hopefully keep my new phone safe. I like to look after my things, I only replaced my Sony Xperia as my banking app was about to stop working on Android 7 lol

Welcome to the forums. Yes, that's a brand new model and only available in a few markets for now. I think you have to wait a bit until accessories are easily available online.

And yes, Motorola abandoned their own Gallery app a while ago and switched to Google Photos as the stock one. You need to get used to that and decide which media folders you want to sync with your Google account.

I'm very curious about that model, very light weight, excellent display with high refresh rate, decent cameras and a more than capable SoC. A bit worried about battery life, though. Please, let us know how you find it.

Unfortunately that's for the older Edge 30 Pro (yes, Moto model names are veeeeery confusing :) ).

I was reading today about that brand new Edge 30. Interesting device.

There is a selector where you can choose between the Edge 30 Pro and the Edge 30. Is that still the wrong model?
