May 19, 1972 – FIRE AT KAMLOOPS KLUB
The Kamloops Klub, 302 N. First, was extensively damaged Monday night by fire. The blaze was noticed just before midnight by lounge patrons when a cloud of smoke burst in from the rear of the building, which is located between the Panida Theatre and the Bi-Rite Drug Store and North Idaho Realty building. Neither of these buildings were ever threatened due to strong firewalls. A little-known fire hose located on the stage of the theatre was used to keep the fire truck tanks filled. Russell Kotschevar owns the building. The business is operated by Mr. and Mrs. Steve Rasor.

SHS GIRLS TRACK SQUAD PLACES SECOND
The Sandpoint High School girls’ track squad placed second at the state meet in Twin Falls Saturday, equaling the highest standing ever achieved by a SHS athletic team in statewide competition. Junior Helen Walkley was the outstanding performer, winning the 100 yard dash, the 220 and the long jump, and setting two new state records. SHS Senior Kathy Taylor won the discus, setting a new district record. Ruth Oliver took third in the 440. The mile relay team of Bette Smith, Jeanne Saunders, Starla Rigby and Ruth Oliver also placed third. The 440 relay team was Gayla Chronic, Hanna Munson, Janet Snedden and Helen Walkley. The last time a Bulldog team placed second at state was in 1926 when the boys’ basketball team lost to Lewiston in the championship game.

Pend d’Oreille Review
May 19, 1922 – LINOTYPE KNOCKED OUT
Owing to the putting out of commission of the linotype for three days, the Review is a day late in publication this week. The Review was crippled by the burning out of the “elements” in the linotype’s electric pot, necessitating a wait from out of town for repairs. The Review acknowledges courtesies of the (Northern Idaho) News and the use of its linotype this week.

WALKED THROUGH HERE IN 1884
J.T. Lacasse and family of Missoula spent a few hours in Sandpoint Thursday afternoon on their way home after a motor trip. Mr. Lacasse made his first trip to Sandpoint in 1884 with his brother. They started from their home in Quebec and worked along the Canadian Pacific railway line. At the end of the rails they journeyed on foot, coming to Sandpoint by way of Bonners Ferry. They camped for three weeks on the shore of Lake Pend d’Oreille and then went on to Missoula where they made their home. Mr. Lacasse stated that during his sojourn in Sandpoint, the Indians used to hold pow-wows on the beach every evening. When the Lacasse brothers reached Missoula, they had walked 800 miles.

WOODMEN PARADE
The local lodge of Modern Woodmen had a big initiation and blowout Wednesday evening. The festivities started at 8 o’clock with a street parade with several hundred members in line, behind the drill team and several floats. Following the parade, the Liberty theater was used to put on the initiation ceremonies.
