The victim and suspect are both 16-year-old students who attend Montclair High School, according to police.

Montclair PD said the suspect approached the victim from behind and stabbed her in the head with a fixed blade knife and continued to stab her several more times when she turned around.

Witnesses to the incident intervened and stopped the assault and detained the male suspect until officers arrived. The female was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Her injuries were discovered to be non-life threatening and she is expected to recover, Montclair PD said in a statement regarding the incident.

The male suspect was arrested and booked at San Bernardino County Juvenile Hall for attempted murder, police said.

Daniel, the victim’s brother, interviewed by Key News Network outside the hospital, said his sister was found unresponsive about five houses away from home – “literally almost home,”he said.

Daniel said he received a frantic call from his mother around 3:30 p.m. telling him that his sister had been stabbed.

To Daniel’s knowledge, a passerby came out – stepped out of the car – tackled the attacker and held him until police arrived. Daniel said neighbors came out to ask the attacker why he would do such a thing, and Daniel said the attacker literally just responded – “I have issues.”

Daniel also said his sister knows the attacker.

The investigation is still ongoing and anyone who witnessed this event or has any information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Montclair Police Department at (909) 448-3600.
