SAN ANTONIO (KABB/WOAI) - The November election will determine who will take Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff's seat after a 20-plus year run, but the run-off for the Democratic nominee for County Judge is less than a week away.
You can say it's a battle of experience.
Next Tuesday, Peter Sakai and Ina Minjarez will go head-to-head for the Democratic nomination for judge.
One will face-off against Republican nominee Trish DeBerry in November.
Sakai served as a children's court judge for 16 years.
He says his role as a court judge proves he's more than capable of running the county and he's set his priorities.
"As a judge, I came up with innovative programs, out-of-box thinking and basically improving the system, especially for our foster children," says Sakai. "I want to bring that platform to Bexar county. I want to make sure we take care of our children and families."
Minjarez, a former attorney who served as a Texas state representative for seven years, says she's proven herself as a leader.
"As a Texas state legislator, I have dealt with the issues on the state level that are going to come before commissioners' court," says Minjarez. "I served on the Texas state budget, which handled that $200 billion plus budget and I was a vice chair of the ARPA funding for the state."
Their Republican opponent says while critics mention the County Judge seat will stay blue, she thinks it can turn red.
"The rate of inflation that's going on, gas prices are at an all time high, the border seems to be out of control and we're looking at the repeal of title 42, so we think they are very good signs for Republicans," says Trish DeBerry.
We asked both Sakai and Minjarez how they would continue to build the county after a years-long pandemic and economic woes.
"We need to reduce property taxes, we need to relook at the property appraisals that are skyrocketing," says Sakai.
"Having honest discussions with the business community about what they need to provide their employees with services, with benefits," says Minjarez. "It's a holistic approach."
DeBerry says whatever the outcome next Tuesday, it'll be a good match-up.
She's prepared either way.
"I've been an entrepreneur, a small business person all of my life and I think that is what sets us apart - that pragmatic business experience, which I think is important as a CEO of the county. It's really the mayor of the county and I think I bring that skill set to Bexar," says DeBerry.
