The District 2 boys volleyball playoffs opened on Wednesday as Hazleton Area topped Wyoming Valley West 3-0 in a Class 3A quarterfinal match.
The Cougars beat the Spartans 25-12, 25-19, 25-18 to advance to Friday’s semifinals on the road against Abington Heights. Wilkes-Barre Area will travel to Delaware Valley in the other 3A semifinal, which will be played Monday.
For Hazleton Area, Connor Wolfe had 34 assists, one kill, one block, two digs, two aces and six service points. Antony Rosario (10 kills, two blocks, 13 digs, nine service points), Kevin Ortiz (six kills, one block, eight digs, eight service points, one ace) and Logan Aikens (eight kills, two blocks, two digs) all contributed.
BOYS LACROSSE
Scranton Prep 9, Dallas 8
The Cavaliers outlasted the Mountaineers in the final quarterfinal matchup in Class 2A. Prep advanced to Friday’s semifinals to face host Wyoming Seminary.
Crestwood will host Lake-Lehman in the other 2A semifinal.
SOFTBALL
Crestwood 12, Wyoming Valley West 1
Lauren Kalinowski drove in four runs and Kayla Wisniewski doubled and had two RBI as Crestwood won in five innings.
The Comets scored six times in the fifth to end the game by the 10-run rule.
Jessica Koptcho finished with a one-hitter, striking out nine.
Madison Austra doubled and scored Valley West’s only run.
Valley View 15, Wyoming Area 0
Kallie Karwoski drove in three runs and Tessa Stafursky threw a three-hitter as Valley View defeated Wyoming Area in four innings.
Jocelyn Williams, Maggie Hallman and Renee Huddock had singles for Wyoming Area.
Lake-Lehman 21, MMI Prep 2
Kirsten Finarelli homered, doubled and had four RBI as Lake-Lehman won in four innings.
Lucy Honeywell tripled and had three RBI for the Black Knights. Ava Hudak, Jillian Ulozas, Rylie Bucknavage and Sarayah Smith all had two RBI each. Ulozas, Smith and Hailey Kline had doubles.
Hazleton Area 12, Wilkes-Barre Area 2
Kelsie Peters and Madison Forsythe homered as Hazleton Area defeated Wilkes-Barre Area.
Peters finished 3-for-4. Forsythe also had a triple. Olivia Williams was 2-for-3 with a double. Gabriela Terraccino was 2-for-3.
Lyssa Rhodes had a triple and single for WBA.
