RALEIGH, N.C. — Wednesday, the Raleigh Police chief held a meeting with downtown residents.

She spoke about what can be done to protect the thousands of people who frequent Glenwood South.

Glenwood South is typically busy no matter the day or time. It gets a little hectic on weekends with so many people.

Chief Estella Patterson said her goal is to make Raleigh the safest city in the country.

Patterson said there’s an alarming increase in violence and weapons in Glenwood South

Patterson said officers are out patrolling the streets on Friday and Saturday- within a 6-block radius of Glenwood Avenue.

There have already been 457 reports of incidents in that 6-block radius.

“I think it would be helpful for businesses to communicate that we’re not letting anybody else in because we’re at capacity and people will probably start leaving and that will alleviate some of the crowd issues,” said Patterson.

Some people suggested shutting down the area.

Patterson said that’s the last thing she wants to do.

Alcohol and drugs are also on the rise. So far there have been 95 drug violation charges this year.
